Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Misericordia University softball team continued their dominance both in the field and at the plate in a doubleheader sweep over Delaware Valley, Saturday afternoon at Anderson Field.
The Cougars took the opener 8-0 in five innings and followed with a 7-0 victory in game two. The pitching staff of
Bailee Schies,
Alissa Steier,
Jess Armillay and
Nicole Petti has shut out opponents in each of the last four games and have helped the Cougars to a five-game winning streak.
In addition to the stellar pitching,
Megan Hardy has been on a tear at the plate, adding two more home runs in today's doubleheader and now has a team-high eight homers and 30 RBI.
Melanie Quintanilla and
Sam Hare drove in two runs each while Hardy finished the first game with two hits.
Kristina Mandala and
Diana Kestenbaum also drove in a run en route to the win.
Schies was terrific in the circle in the opener as she tossed five shutout innings allowing just three hits and striking out seven en route to her seventh win of the season. Steier picked up where Schies left off by not allowing a hit and preserving the Cougar lead, and 8-0 win.
Hardy hit yet another line drive home run to left-center in the home half of the first to give MU the 1-0 advantage early in the game.
Andi Veneziale roped a single to center in the second and then crushed a two-RBI double down the right field line in the third. Mandala added an RBI single and Quintanilla scored on an error earlier in the inning to give MU a 6-0 advantage over the Aggies after three innings of play.
Hardy came up in the fourth and hit her second home run of the game, this one even further over the right-centerfield fence than the last one. Her eighth homer of the year capped MU's scoring in the second game and eventually gave the Cougars a 7-0 victory.
Armillay pitched her way out of two bases loaded jams, one in the first and one in the third while also stranding an Aggie on third in the second inning. Despite the large lead, Petti earned the save, because she tossed four innings of shutout softball, allowing just one hit while striking out three.
With the win MU is now 13-11 overall, including a 4-2 mark in the Freedom Conference and is 7-1 at Anderson Field.
The Cougars are back in action Sunday afternoon at 1:00 for a doubleheader with DeSales at Anderson Field.
