Armillay, Schies, Extend MU Shutout Streak to 6 in DH Sweep over DeSales

4/13/2014 5:52:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Misericordia University softball continued its dominance in the circle and did just enough at the plate en route to yet another doubleheader sweep, this time over DeSales University on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Anderson Field.

The Cougars took the opener 1-0 and the finale 3-0. The MU pitching staff has now pitched six consecutive shutouts and has helped the Cougars to a seven game winning streak.

Megan Gowe and Megan Hardy had the only hits for the Cougars in the opener, but it proved to be just enough. Gowe found the left-centerfield gap for a triple and used heads up base running by not even hesitating to break for home on a passed ball, giving MU the 1-0 lead after six innings and eventually the win.

Bailee Schies earned the win in the circle tossing a complete game, allowing just four hits and struck out three Bulldogs. With the win Schies improves to 8-4 on the season.

The Cougars played some small ball to get on the board when Melissa Parked laid down a bunt with runners on second and third in the home half of the second. The Bulldogs threw the ball away trying to get Sam Hare at the plate and Andi Veneziale, without hesitation, came sprinting towards the plate ahead of the throw, scoring all the way from second to give the Cougars a 2-0 advantage heading into the third.

MU picked up another run on yet another bunt, this time Hare brought Gowe in from third, giving the Cougars the 3-0 victory and the sweep in an important conference contest.

Armillay picked up the win in the finale, tossing a complete game while allowing just five hits and didn't walk a batter.

With the win, MU improves to 15-11 overall and 6-4 in the Freedom conference. The Cougars return to action Tuesday afternoon at Anderson Field for a doubleheader with Neumann University at 3:00.
