Armillay, Hardy Lead MU to DH Sweep Over Scranton

Armillay tosses complete game in nightcap

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Misericordia University softball team swept Scranton University in their home opener against Scranton. The Cougars earned an 8-5 victory in game one and won the nightcap 4-1, Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Cougars fell to an early 3-0 deficit after the first three innings of play, but erupted for a six-run home half of the fourth, taking a 6-3 lead. Melanie Quintanilla brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly and Megan Gowe two-RBI single to right. Megan Hardy broke it open for MU with a three-run rocket over the left-centerfield fence.
 
Quintanilla picked up her second RBI of the day with a dribbler to shortstop that allowed Andi Veneziale to score from third. Gowe added her third RBI of the day with single through the left side.
 
The Royals gave the Cougars a bit of a scare, scoring two runs in the top half of the seventh, but Alissa Steier worked a pop up to second base to end the game and give MU the victory in the opening game.
 
Whitney Ellenberg reached base in each of her four trips to the plate, including three walks. Veneziale, Gowe and Sam Hare all had two hits each in the game one victory.
 
Bailee Schies earned the win in the circle for the Cougars. The freshman tossed six inning allowing just five hits a struck out four.
 
Jess Armillay was terrific in the circle in the nightcap. The lone senior on the squad tossed a complete game allowing just one run on six hits and stuck out two en route to her second victory of the year.
 
The MU offense fed off the momentum created in game one by taking a 2-0 lead on a two-RBI single to left-center by Kristi Seiler in the first inning of the nightcap.
 
The Royals got one back in the third, but the Cougars responded with a run of their own in the fourth when Ellenberg scored from third on Hardy's puzzling ground ball towards the shortstop.
 
The Cougars picked up their final run in the home half of the fifth on a Mackenzie Yurko line drive RBI single to right-center. Armillay closed the door on the Royals in the sixth and seventh and MU earned its first sweep of the season.
 
With the win, MU improves to an even 8-8 on the season, including a 1-1 record in the Freedom Conference. The Cougars travel to FDU-Florham for a doubleheader with the Devils, Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
