Box Score 2 The Misericordia University softball team handed Manhattanville College its first Freedom Conference loss with a 4-3 come from behind victory over the Valiants on Sunday afternoon at Anderson Field.
Mackenzie Yurko drew a walk with the bases loaded walk in the sixth to force the tying run in from third and
Megan Gowe drew a five-pitch, bases loaded walk with two outs, bringing the eventual winning run in from third.
Alissa Steier picked up the win, tossing two perfect innings in relief of MU starter,
Jess Armillay, and the Cougars snuck away with a huge victory in game two over the Valiants.
Manhattanville did strike first in the second half of the doubleheader when Shauna Mulkerin scored from third on a ground ball off the bat of Shelbee Damianos.
Megan Hardy led off the home half of the fourth with a ground ball single right back up the middle and
Kristi Seiler followed with a shot to the left-centerfield gap, giving MU runners on second and third with nobody out.
Melissa Parker then sent a sacrifice fly out to right field, allowing Hardy to score from third and tie the game at 1-1.
Later in the inning Seiler scored from third on a ground ball to second by
Sam Hare and the Cougars took a 2-1 lead into the fifth.
The Valiants responded with two of their own in the top of the fifth, claiming a 3-2 lead. The Manhattanville lead could have been much bigger had it not been for a perfect throw by
Cailey Ware and a great tag by Hardy to get Alyx Scapperotti trying to score from second on a Manhattanville single.
The MU offense awoke in the sixth as Parker led off the inning with a line drive single to right-center and Hare roped a double over the centerfielder's head to give the Cougar's runners on second and third with one out. Steier was then hit by a pitch loading the bases for Yurko with the Cougars trailing 3-2. Yurko and Gowe drew walks to give MU the lead and eventually the 4-3 win.
Gowe led the Cougars on offense with two hits. Armillay allowed just one earned run over five innings in the circle, picking up the no-decision.
Melanie Quintanilla had an RBI single right back up the middle in game one, bringing the Cougars to within 2-1 after two innings, but Manhattanville answered with a four-run fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead.
MU came within 6-3 after an RBI double by Seiler and an RBI single by Parker, but it wasn't enough as Manhattanville earned a 7-3 win in the opening game.
Quintanilla finished the opener with two hits while Seiler, Steier, Parker and Gowe had one hit each.
With the split, MU is now 9-11 on the season, including a 2-4 mark in the Freedom Conference. The Cougars return to action for a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Keystone. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
