Box Score The Misericordia University baseball team dropped its opening game to Baldwin Wallace, 8-4, Wednesday morning at PNC Field at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional.
Chris Boroch had two hits and scored three times and Kyles Lindsay drove in two runs on two hits.
Miles Westrich added two hits for the Cougars.
Kyle Chontos and Brad Gugliotta both had four hits for Baldwin Wallace. Chontos drove in three runs and winning pitcher added two hits and scored two runs as the fourth-seeded Yellow Jackets improved to 26-18.
Eric Murphy added a two-run triple for Baldwin Wallace.
Zimmerman struck out six in 4.1 innings of relief work to earn his first career win.
Misericordia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Boroch looped a soft liner just over a leaping Zimmerman and moved to second a sacrifice bunt. After moving up a groundout, Boroch came home on a wild pitch.
Baldwin Wallace answered with three runs in the bottom of the first.
Gugliotta led off with a double inside the right field line and tied the score on Zimmerman's single to center. Chontos singled to put runners on the corners and Murphy made it 3-1 with a two-out, two-run triple into the right field corner.
Westrich and
Al Reda hit back-to-back two-out singles in the top of the second and
Jeremy DeCotiis drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases, but BW starter Alex Albright induced a foul pop to the catcher to escape the jam.
BW made it 5-1 in the second when Alex Green lined a lead-off single up the middle, stole second and came home on Gugliotta's chopper through the middle. After another stolen base, Chontos lined an opposite field single to left.
Gugliotta doubled inside the right field line for the second time with one out in the fourth and Chontos lined a two-out double to right center to stretch the lead to 6-1.
Misericordia got a pair of runs back in the fifth. Boroch dropped a single into short right and
Nick Hair walked. After Zimmerman came on to pitch, Lindsay singled past a diving first baseman to score Boroch.
Max German lined a single to right to make it 6-3.
Mike Comerford reached on an error to load the bases, but Zimmerman got two strikeouts and a ground out to escape further damage.
Boroch reached on an error to lead off the sixth, moved up on a fielder's choice and scored on Lindsay's single to center to make it 6-4.
With one down in the bottom of the sixth, Gugliotta lined a 3-2 pitch to center and moved up on Zimmerman's bloop single to left. Chontos singled to right field to drive in a run and Steve Montgomery's squeeze bunt was misplayed to make it 8-4.
Baldwin Wallace will face Haverford, Thursday at 4:30.
Misericordia, 29-14-1, will face Moravian in an elimination game, Thursday at 10:00 a.m.
