The Misericordia University soccer team defeated Wilkes, 3-0, on a chilly Wednesday evening at Mangelsdorf Field.
Derek Antonini,
David Malaquias and
Kevin Matlon each scored once while
George Stock,
Niko Amity and Trey Zeigler had an assist apiece.
Amity shook a defender on the right wing, cut inside before firing towards goal and Antonini redirected the ball past the keeper for the first goal at 7:05.
In the 30
th minute, Zeigler laid the ball off to Malaquias inside the box and he shot the ball into the left hand corner to send the Cougars into the half up 2-0.
In the 58
th minute, Stock took a free kick from just past midfield and Matlon powered home the header to finish the scoring for the Cougars.
Misericordia had a few more great scoring opportunities in the second half, including a
Matt Norcini blast from just inside the box that a defender deflected to
Devin Crevani, but his shot was stopped as well. Â
In the 82
nd minute,
Jordan Bailey fired a shot from the right side of the box that bounced off the left post.
Matt Smith, making his first collegiate start in goal, made seven saves to earn his first shutout.
MU got 23 shots off to Wilke's 13 and also won the corner battle 15-5.
The win moves Misericordia to 6-5-1 and 2-1 in the MAC Freedom.
The Cougars will host Manhattanville, Saturday at 3:30.
