Jason Kenny scored 29 points to lead the Misericordia University men's basketball team to an 85-61 win over Summit in the opening round of the 24
th Annual McCarthy Tire Laurel Line Tournament, Friday night at the Anderson Center.
James Hawk added 17 points and 13 rebounds and
Griffin Sponaugle had 11 points in just 13 minutes as the Cougars improved to 2-2.
Earl Chang had a team-high six assists and Kenny added five assists and five rebounds.
After Summit scored the opening bucket, the Cougars went on a 16-2 run to take a 16-4 lead less than five minutes into the game.
Tyler McGarry drilled a three-pointer from the right corner off a nice pass from Hawk to put the Cougars in front and Kenny followed with a three-pointer from the top of the key.
Kenny took a steal coast-to-coast to make it 10-4 and Sponaugle converted a three-point play for a 13-4 advantage.
Kenny grabbed a loose ball and buried a three-pointer from the right wing to cap the run.
Summit pulled within 28-23, but
Jesse Urich answered with a deep three-pointer from the right wing and then found Kenny for a three-pointer from the same spot for a 34-25 lead with less than two minutes to play in the first half.
Kenny found Sponaugle underneath to give MU a 38-27 lead to open the second half.
Summit scored seven straight points to get within 45-43 with 14:16 to go, but the Cougars responded with a 21-2 spurt over the next seven minutes to take a 66-46 lead.
Kenny drained three straight three-pointers and Hawk converted a three-point play to ignite the run.
McGarry hit a turnaround jumper and Chang sank a pull-up jumper to make it 61-46 and the Cougars pulled away.
Misericordia will play Geneseo in the Laurel Line championship game, Saturday at 4:00.
