Cougars Stay Hot, Top Blue Jays 8-2

The Misericordia University baseball team continued to swing a hot bat, capturing an 8-2 victory over Elizabethtown College on Sunday afternoon in Fort Pierce, FL.

Miles Westrich led the Cougars with two hits and two RBI while Mike Comerford hit his second home run of the season. Chris Boroch finished the game 3-3 with an RBI while D.J. Navoczynski, Brian Eshleman and Al Reda each drove in one run in the victory.

All nine players in the lineup reached base safely and the Cougars racked up 16 hits. MU has outscored opponents 34-9 over its first two games of the season.

Tim Burek picked up his first win of the season, tossing five innings and allowing just two runs while striking out five. Jim Tunison was terrific with 2.2 shutout innings in relief. Garrett Pelko struck out the side in the ninth to secure the victory.

The Blue Jays were on the verge of a big first inning, but Burek fought back, allowing just one run and stranding two runners in the opening inning.

Reda tied the game at 1-1, sending a two-strike breaking ball down the right field line. Navoczynski scored from second on the play.

The Cougar offense exploded for four runs on five hits to take a 5-1 lead into the fourth inning. Kyle Lindsay led off the inning with a single and Comerford followed with a two-run blast to left field.

With two outs in the inning, Eshleman singled to left and Westrich drove him in with a double to left-center. Reda kept the inning alive by drawing a walk and Boroch ripped a double down the right field line to drive in the fourth and final run of the inning.

Navoczynski added to the Cougar's lead with an RBI single up the middle and later scored on an RBI double to left-center off the bat of Eshleman to make it a 7-1 game after four.

The Blue Jays got one back in the sixth and were on the verge of a big sixth inning. However, with the bases loaded and one out, head coach Pete Egbert called for Tunison. The right-hander came on and picked up a strikeout and pop out to get out of the bases loaded jam.

Westrich capped the Cougars scoring with an RBI single to right.

With the win, MU improves to 2-0 and returns to action Monday morning at 10 a.m. against Lebanon Valley in Fort Pierce.
