The Misericordia University baseball team used a combination of timely hitting and dominant pitching to capture a 6-1 victory over Kenyon College on Wednesday afternoon in Fort Pierce, FL.
Â
Chris Boroch and
Chad Bell led the Cougar's offense with two hits, two RBI and a stolen base each while
Nick Hair added two hits and
Mike Comerford drove in a run.
Â
Michael Turton picked up the win on the mound in his first collegiate start. The right-hander was terrific, allowing just one run while striking out four over five innings of work.
Â
Garrett Pelko was dominant in his second appearance out of the bullpen this year. The lefty allowed just one hit in four scoreless innings to pick up his first save of the season.
Â
The Lords took an early lead in the top of the first, when Max Heldman roped a leadoff double to the left field wall and then scored on a shallow fly ball to centerfield that was lost in the sun and dropped in for a base hit.
Â
The Kenyon lead didn't last long as the Cougars struck right back in the home half of the first. Boroch and Hair picked up back-to-back singles while
Kyle Lindsay drew a walk to load the bases with nobody out in the inning. Comerford then tied the game with an RBI single to left.
Â
The Lords nearly got out of the jam, getting two quick outs, but Bell gave MU a 3-1 lead with a two-run single to left.
Â
Kenyon threatened with runners on the corners and two outs in the fifth. However, Boroch made a magnificent play, ranging to his right and making a strong throw across the diamond to
Miles Westrich who picked it out of the dirt for the third out.
Â
Boroch then went to work at the plate, extending the Cougar's lead to 5-1 with a two-run double to left-center.
Al Reda scored from third and
Jeremy DeCotiis hustled all the way in from first to score on Boroch's shot to the gap.
Â
Hair added an RBI double in the eighth to cap the Cougars scoring in the 6-1 victory.
Â
With the win, MU improves to 4-1 while Kenyon falls to 3-2.
Â
The Cougars are back in action Thursday morning at 11 against Susquehanna University in Fort Pierce, FL.
