Long Ball Leads MU to Sweep at King's

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Misericordia University softball team swept a doubleheader Thursday afternoon at King's College.
 
The Cougars won the first game 7-3 and then picked up a 5-3 victory in the nightcap.
 
Sam Hare, Megan Hardy and Melissa Parker all homered while Lori Brennan drove in two runs to lead the Cougars to victory in the opener.
 
Alissa Steier earned the win in the first game, tossing a complete game, allowing three runs on 11 hits while striking out five to improve to 6-7 in the circle.
 
Andi Veneziale and Kristi Seiler provided the power in the second game with one home run each while Brennan also drove in a run to lead MU to a win in the nightcap.
 
Maddie Stebich picked up her third win of the season, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out two over 4.1 innings in the circle in game two.
 
King't took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. However, Hare, Hardy and Parker all homered to give MU a 5-2 lead heading into the second inning.
 
Brennan added an RBI single in the second to extend the Cougars' lead to 6-2 in the second.
 
King's got one back in the fourth, but it was too little, too late, as Brennan's sacrifice fly in the fourth put the game out of reach.
 
Veneziale gave MU a 2-0 lead in the finale with a two-run blast in the second inning. Brennan added an RBI single in the third and Veneziale added an RBI double, extending the Cougars' lead to 4-0 after three innings of play.
 
King's got on the board in the top of the fifth, but Seiler answered with a solo homer in the home half to make it a 5-2 game in favor of the Cougars.
 
The Lady Monarchs threatened with one run in the sixth and one in the seventh, but MU held on for the 5-3 victory.
 
With the sweep, MU improves to 10-8 overall and 5-1 in the Freedom Conference. King's falls to 4-8 and 0-2 in the conference.
 
MU returns to action Monday for a doubleheader at the University of Scranton, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
