The Misericordia University baseball team split a doubleheader with Manhattanville College on Saturday afternoon at Tambur Field.
MU captured a 12-2 victory in the opener and then fell 6-2 in the finale.
Chris Boroch led a powerful MU attack in game one with three hits and three RBI while
Mike Comerford,
Alec Iurato,
Steve Cuccio and
Al Reda drove in two runs each andÂ
D.J. Navoczynski drove in one run in the victory.
Cory Vogeli was terrific on the mound, allowing just one earned run on four hits over six innings of work.
Corey Lee came in and tossed a scoreless top of the seventh to preserve the 12-2 victory on Senior Appreciation Day.
Comerford started the Cougars' scoring spree with a sacrifice fly to centerfield in the top of the first. Later in the inning, Iurato crushed a triple down the right field line, extending the Cougars' lead to 3-0 after one.
Manhattanville added one run in the top of the second, but the Cougars struck back with two in the home half of the third. The first run came on a ground ball to the right side by Navoczynski and the second run came in on a Cuccio sacrifice fly to center.
The Valiants added their final run of the game on an MU fielding miscue in the top of the fourth, tightening the Cougars' lead to 5-2.
Comerford made it a three-run game with a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the fourth while Reda and Boroch drove in runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 9-2 ballgame after five.
Cuccio and Reda added RBI's in the bottom of the sixth while Boroch capped the Cougars' scoring with an RBI single right back up the middle, making it a 12-2 ballgame.
Lee came on and shut the door for the Cougars with a scoreless seventh.
Comerford led the Cougars in game two with one RBI while Boroch finished with two hits in the loss.
Garrett Pelko took the loss in game two, allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out two.
Manhattanville took an early lead on a sacrifice fly in the second.
However, MU came back with one of their own when Navoczynski trotted in from third on a double play ball off the bat of Cuccio in the bottom of the second.
The Cougars then took a 2-1 lead on Comerford's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third.
Manhattanville tied the game in the fourth and then took the lead for good in the fifth. The Valiants added one run in the sixth and two in the seventh to complete the 7-2 victory.
With the split, MU is now 24-8 overall and 13-5 in the Freedom Conference. The Valiants are now 20-15 overall and 13-7 in the conference.
The Cougars return to action Monday afternoon at 3:30 at Keystone College.
