MU Softball Finishes Second in Freedom

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Misericordia University softball team split a pair of games to finish second in the Freedom Conference championships, Saturday.

After eliminating Eastern, 6-3, the Cougars dropped the title game to DeSales, 6-3.

Melissa Parker had a grand slam in the opener and Sam Hardy added a two-run homer.

Bailee Schies scattered 10 hits to earn the complete game win.

In the opener, Eastern took a 1-0 lead the bottom of the second, but the Cougars responded with four in the top of the third.

Melanie Quintanilla singled through the right side with one out and moved to second one out later when Kristi Seiler was hit by a pitch.  Hardy walked to load the bases and Parker blasted a grand slam to center field.

Eastern got a run back in the fourth and the Cougars answered again in their next at bat.

Sam hare led off with a single and Hardy drilled a two-run homer to right center for a 6-2 lead.

The Eagles cut the lead to 6-3 with a run in the fifth and had two runners on with nobody out in the sixth.  After an infield pop out, Eastern loaded the bases, but Schies induced a 5-2-3 double play to end the threat.

Eastern loaded the bases again with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Schies ended the game on a come-backer to the mound to secure the win.

In the final, Parker had a solo homer and Whitney Ellenberg and Sam Hare both had two hits, including a triple.

Lori Brennan and Diana Kestenbaum both doubled.

DeSales scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth for the come-from-behind win.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Ellenberg led off with a triple and trotted home on Hare's triple.

MU went ahead 2-0 on Parker's solo homer in the fourth and DeSales got one back with a solo homer in the bottom of the frame.

DeSales took the lead with a four-run fifth inning.

Hare singled to lead off the seventh and moved to second on Hardy's one-out single.  Parker was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Brennan drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

But, DeSales got a strikeout to end the game.

Misericordia, 26-15, will await a potential ECAC Tournament bid.
