Vogeli Tosses Complete Game, Cougars Advance to Freedom Championship

Cory Vogeli was recently named Freedom Conference Pitcher of the Year and on Friday afternoon in West Lawn, PA he certainly looked the part.

The junior southpaw tossed a complete game shutout to lead the Misericordia University baseball team to a 2-0 victory over fourth-seeded Eastern.

He allowed just three hits while striking out five and walking just one to improve to 8-0 on the year.

Jeremy DeCotiis and Steve Cuccio drove in one run each while Kyle Lindsay and Chris Boroch added two hits to lead the Cougars' offense. Al Reda was terrific behind the plate, throwing out the only two base runners that tried to steal in the game.

Cuccio gave MU the only run it would need with an RBI double to right field in the bottom of the fourth. Lindsay came around to score on the Cuccio double after leading off the inning with a single to left-center.

The Cougars had a chance to extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Al Reda and Boroch singled and Lindsay drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. However, Eastern got out of the jam with a strikeout to keep the MU lead at 1-0 heading into the top of the fifth.

The Cougars extended their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single to center by DeCotiis. Boroch scored from second on the play after reaching on a fielder's choice and then stealing second earlier in the inning.

Vogeli continued his dominance with two perfect innings to preserve the 2-0 victory over the Eagles.

The Cougars (28-10) will now play for their fifth consecutive Freedom Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon at 12 against the winner of Friday night's elimination game between top-seeded DeSales (26-16) and Eastern (16-23).
