Seely Leads MU to Win at CCNY

After several tough losses, the Misericordia University women's basketball team finally came out on top of a close game with a 63-61 win at City College of New York, Sunday afternoon.

Justine Seely scored the game-winning layup with six seconds remaining to finish a big day with 25 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks, four steals and three assists.

Japriya Carroll added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars while Leanne Forsyth had seven points and five assists, including Seely's game-winner.

Liz Waleski had eight points off the bench for MU.

After Seely made back-to-back layups to give the Cougars a 61-55 lead with 1:34 to play, the Beavers rallied to tie the score for the fifth time of the final quarter, 61-61, with less than a minute remaining.

Trailing 15-7 after the first quarter, the Cougars opened the second period with an 11-0 run to take an 18-15 lead.

Forsyth and Seely sandwiched layups around a three-pointer by Carroll to pull within a point and Nikki Baro added two jumpers for an 18-15 lead midway through the period.

Waleski buried a three-pointer at the end of the quarter to give MU a 27-25 halftime lead.

CCNY rallied to take a 44-35 lead late in the third quarter, but Seely scored six straight points and Haley Fitzpatrick made two free throws to cut the deficit to 44-43 heading into the final period.

Carroll MU ahead 46-44 with a three-pointer to opening the fourth quarter and the Cougars never trailed again.

MU, 4-9, will return to MAC Freedom play at Wilkes, Wednesday.
