MU Men Roar Past Division II Mansfield in the Second Half

The Misericordia men's basketball team beat Division II Mansfield, 82-67, Saturday afternoon at Decker Gymnasium.

Jason Kenny led all scorers with 21 while James Hawk had 15 points, five rebounds and five blocks. Griffin Sponaugle scored 13 points, dished out five assists, grabbed six rebounds and added four steals.

The Cougars blew the game wide open with an 11-0 run midway through the second half, with score at 57-52.

First Kenny scored on a layup.

Then, Erik Kerns stole the ball and gave it to Kenny, who passed it over to Sponaugle who drained a three.

Next, MU got a stop, and on the other end Sponaugle drained another three off assist from Kenny again.

Finally, Alec Rodway found Kenny all alone behind the three point line and he drilled it, making the score at 68-52 with 8:07 to go.

Mansfield got it down to 11 with 4:54 to go, but an Erik Kerns three push it back to 14 with 3:41 to go and the Mountaineers didn't threaten the rest of the way.

The entire first half was a back and forth affair, the largest lead held by either team was six points.

Mansfield led 4-0 three minutes into the game, but Kerns got MU on the board with a jumper from the left elbow.

The teams went back and forth over, with Mansfield eventually tying it up at 12 with 12 minutes to go in the first half.

Tyler McGarry drained a three from the right wing off a pass from Tanner Reyan which pushed the Cougars ahead 16-14, with 10:40 remaining.

Kenny made a running layup from the left side and was fouled, so with the made foul shot the score was 23-21 MU with 7:31 to go.

Inside of two minutes in the first half, Kenny drained a three off a feed from Kerns.

And then with less than a minute to go, D.J. Marlow drove down the lane and scored off the glass to give the Cougars a 37-31 lead going into halftime.

Misericordia shot 49 percent from the field and 45 percent (11-24) from behind the line.

They held Mansfield to 39 percent from the field and 21 percent (5-23) from the three point line.

MU was active on defense, blocking seven shots and tallying eight steals.

Rodway notched six points, six rebounds and two assists in his first collegiate start.

The win moves Misericordia to 7-6 on the year.

MU returns to action Wednesday, at Wilkes. Tipoff is at 8 pm.
