Led by seniors
Shannon Croasdale and
Justine Seely, the Misericordia University women's basketball team beat TCNJ, 71-67, in the championship game of the Gwynedd-Mercy Tip-Off Tournament, Saturday afternoon.
Croasdale earned MVP honors after scoring 14 pointers and dishing out five assists. Seely had her second straight double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament team.
Japriya Carroll had 14 points and
Rachel Carmody added 11 points and six rebounds as MU improved to 3-0.
Trailing 12-7 midway through the first period, Carroll hit a three-pointer and two free throws to put MU ahead, 13-12, with 2:04 left in the stanza.
After a TCNJ three-pointer,
Liz Waleski answered with a three-pointer to put Misericordia in front for good, 16-15.
Seely added three free throws to give MU a 16-15 lead after one period.
Croasdale drilled a three-pointer and a Carmody layup stretched the lead to 28-17 midway through the second quarter.
Jaclyn Hajec's three-pointer made it 31-19 with 4:13 remaining in the first half.
Neither team scored for three minutes until a Croasdale three-pointer with :23 remaining gave the Cougars a 36-21 halftime lead.
Carmody opened the second half with a layup to give Misericordia its biggest lead of the game, 38-21.
TCNJ cut it to 52-43 heading to the fourth quarter and pulled with 54-53 with 6:30 to play.
Waleski sank a pair of free throws and Seely connected on a three-pointer to make it 59-53 with 4:14 to go.
Leading 63-61 with 2:01 left, Waleski made a layup and Carroll made three free throws to seal the win.
Misericordia shot 47.1% from three-point range and outscored the Lions 19-2 on second chance points.
MU will travel to Lycoming, Tuesday.
