The Misericordia University men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, 83-75, to Swarthmore in a battle of unbeaten teams, Sunday afternoon in the Anderson Center.
Jason Kenny had a game-high 26 points to lead the Cougars while
Tre Fields had 18 and
Tony Harding added 13. Â
James Hawk ad a game-high 10 rebounds and
Griffin Sponaugle had seen assists.
Swarthmore broke a 55-55 tie with a 12-0 run to take a 67-55 lead with 3:24 to go.
Fields hit three three-pointers in the final minute to get the Cougars within 76-70.
Sponaugle's driving layup gave the Cougars their first lead, 15-14, five minutes into the game, but the Garnet rallied to take a 30-20 lead over the next 10 minutes.
Kenny hit a three-pointer out of a timeout and added two free throws to cut the deficit to 30-25 with 4:55 left in the first half.
Sponaugle found Hawk with a lob for a layup to make it 30-27, but Swarthmore scored five straight points.
Tony Harding drilled a three-pointer from the right corner and Fields added a free throw to make it 35-33, but the Garnet closed the half with a three-pointer and a 38-33 lead.
After Swarthmore scored five straight points to open the second half, but the Cougars responded with a 12-0 run to take the lead.
Fields hit a three from the top of the key and Kenny followed with a deep three-pointer from the left wing.
Harding and Kenny both made two free throws and Harding's putback gave the Cougars 45-43 lead with 13:48 remaining.
Swarthmore responded with a 12-0 run to go back in front, 55-45, midway through the second half.
Stone McCreary a three-pointer from the left corner to ignite a 10-0 spurt to pull the Cougars even. After five straight points by Kenny,
Noah Rivera's putback tied the score, 55-55, with 8:36 left.
The Garnet scored the next 12 points to go in front for good, 67-55, with 3:24 to play.
Misericordia, 4-1, will travel to Utica, Friday.
