The Misericordia University baseball team opened the 2016 season with a doubleheader split at #16 Shenandoah, Saturday.

The Cougars dropped the opener, 5-4, in 13 innings, but rallied to win the nightcap, 6-2, in 13 innings.

After Shenandoah took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of the second game, the MU pitching staff held the Hornets scoreless for the next 12 innings and the Cougars scored four runs in the top of the 13
th.

Mike Turton picked up the win with two shutout innings of relief and
Tim Burek struck out seven in six innings of shutout relief.
Â
Cory Vogeli started and struck out eight over five innings.
Â
Chris Boroch had two hits and two RBI and
Alec Iurato and
Al Reda both had two hits.
Â
Down 2-0, the Cougars got a run back in the fifth. Iurato was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and
Miles Westrich reached via fielder's choice. Boroch's two-out single to left scored Westrich to cut the deficit in half.

Kyle Lindsay reached on an outfield error to lead off the sixth and came around on
Steve Cuccio's two out double to center field to tie the score, 2-2.

The Cougars loaded the bases in the 11
th when
Mike Comerford walked,
Kenny Jarema was hit by a pitch and Iurato reached on an infield single. The Hornets got out of the inning on a pair of groundouts.

Scott Carton started the game-winning rally with a pinch-hit walk to open the 13
th. Pinch-runner
Steve Weisensee moved up on a sacrifice bunt and scored the go-ahead run on Iurato's double to left center.
After Westrich was intentionally walked, Reda singled through the left side to make it 4-2 and Boroch single to right field gave the Cougars a 5-2 lead with Reda advancing to third.

Reda came home on a throwing error on
Jeremy DeCotiis' sacrifice bunt to close the scoring.

Turton retired the Hornets in order in the bottom of the 13
th to earn the win.

In the opener,
D.J. Navoczynski had a two-run double and
Mike Comerford added a double and scored twice.
Â
Iurato drove in a run.
Â
Ryan Dorosh scattered five hits and struck out five in five innings of work and Garret Pelko struck out four and allowed just two hits in six innings of relief.

Jim Tunison took the loss in relief.

The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Shenandoah answered with three runs in the bottom half.

DeCotiis singled with one out in the top of the first innings and Comerford drew a two-out walk before Navoczynski doubled to left field to put MU ahead, 2-0.

Trailing 3-2, MU tied the game with a run in the sixth when Navoczynski led off and scored on an outfield error.

Misericordia took the lead in the top of the 10th inning, but the Hornets stayed alive with a run in the bottom half.
Â
Comerford drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a sacrifice and came home on Iurato's two-out single to right.

Misericordia will travel to Puerto Rico for the inaugural Clemente Cup next weekend.
