MU shutout Wheaton 5-0, before falling to Ohio Wesleyan in the nightcap 12-3 in five innings.
MU went to work quickly against Wheaton, starting the game off with back to back hits.
First
Melanie Quintanilla beat out a throw by the shortstop and then
Abby Marzzacco singled to leftfield.
The next two batters were retired, but
Whitney Ellenberg hit another single to load the bases and then
Jessica Pluta hit a ball that the first basemen couldn't handle. Quintanilla scored, which gave MU a 1-0 lead.
Bailee Schies had the Thunder locked down all day, holding them to three hits for the game.
In the top of the sixth a single and a walk mixed in with a groundout and a popup had Wheaton with runners on first and second with two outs.
They smashed a ball up the middle that Quintanilla snagged out of the air and tagged second, preventing any damage. MU was close to their first victory, and in the bottom of the sixth would push their lead to 5-0.
A double by
Mackenzie Yurko plus singles from Pluta, Marzzacco,
Lori Brennan and
Melissa Parker mixed with two Wheaton errors allowed MU to put four runs on the board, giving them a 5-0 lead.
A popup, a ground out and a fly out to centerfield later gave MU their first win of the season and the first win of head coach
Lindsay Freitag's career.
In the second game MU again used a leadoff single from Quintanilla and a bunt single from Marzzacco to give themselves a dangerous start.
Parker managed to drive in one run, giving MU another 1-0 lead but this time, Ohio Wesleyan had an answer.
Ohio Wesleyan drove in two runs in the first and second innings to jump out to a 4-1 lead through two innings.
Pluta drove in Parker in the third to get a run back for MU, but Ohio Wesleyan put up eight runs in the third to make to it 12-2 by the end of the third.
Melissa Parker absolutely obliterated a ball over the centerfield wall, getting on back for MU.
The game ended after five and a half innings.
MIU will play another two games tomorrow, Simmons College at 9:00 a.m. and St. Mary's at 1:00.
