MU Baseball Edges Stevens

The Misericordia University baseball team made the most of its five hits in a 5-3 win over Stevens, Wednesday afternoon at Tambur Field.

Kenny Jarema had two hits, including a triple, and Mike Comerford and Miles Westrich both had RBI-doubles.

Kyle Weiner scattered four hits in 2.1 innings of relief to earn his first career win.  Garrett Pelko started and allowed five hits over 6.2 innings.

The Cougars broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Jarema led off the inning with a triple into the right field corner and scored on a wild pitch after Alec Iurato battled from behind to draw a walk.

Iurato took third on another wild pitch and beat a strong throw to the plate on D.J. Navoczynski's sacrifice fly to right field.

Stevens tied it with two runs in the seventh and threatened to take the lead.  With the MU infield in, Chris Boroch made a nice stop to his left for the second out and Weiner came on to pitch and induced a grounder on the first pitch to the end inning.

MU went back in front in the bottom of the seventh without the ball leaving the infield.  Westrich was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a ground out.  Kyle Lindsay walked and Jarema beat out an infield single to shortstop to score Westrich.

The Cougars added two runs in the eighth when Navoczynski walked and scored on Comerford's double to the warning track in right center.  Jeremy DeCotiis walked and went to third on a failed squeeze bunt.  Westrich doubled over the first base bag to put MU up 5-2.

After two quick outs in the ninth, Stevens scored on a walk and two hits, but Weiner got a strikeout to end the game.

Misericordia returns to MAC Freedom play at King's, Friday.
