The Misericordia University men's basketball team suffered its second straight heartbreaking road loss, 112-107, in overtime, Wednesday night at Eastern.
Playing without leading scorer
Jason Kenny and fellow starter
James Hawk, the Cougars got a career-high 36 points from
Tony Harding and 24 points from
Tre Fields.
Noah Rivera had a double-double with 21 points and 16 rebounds and
Griffin Sponaugle had 15 points and six assists.Â
Alec Rodway added 12 assists and eight rebounds.
The Cougars rallied from an early deficit, but were ultimately victimized by their own free throw shooting (55.3%).
Rivera's layup off an inbounds pass from Rodway gave MU a 97-92 lead with 20 seconds remaining in regulation, but the Cougars missed four free throws in the final 12 seconds and Eastern got a game-tying layup at the buzzer to force overtime.
A steal by Fields led to a three-point play by Harding and a 104-102 lead with 2:43 to play.
Harding posted up for a layup to give MU a 107-106 lead with 1:18 left, but Eastern scored the final six points to pull out the win.
MU fell behind 11-2 early, but five straight points by Harding pulled them within 22-19 midway through the first half.
Eastern responded with a 10-0 run to stretch their lead to 40-27 with 5:02 left in the first half.
Fields drained a three-pointer for his first points of the game and Sponaugle and Fields both made a pair of free throws and the Cougars trailed 46-40 at halftime.
Fields hit a three-pointer to open the second half, but Eastern answered with a 13-5 run to go up, 59-48.
Eastern eventually took a 74-63 lead, but Harding drilled back-to-back three pointers to cut the deficit to 74-69 midway through the second half.
Fields finished a spinning layup and then slammed home a breakaway feed from
Stone McCreary to get within 75-73.
Harding followed with a pair of free throws as the Cougars pulled even for the first time, 75-75, with 8:24 to play.
Rodway buried a three-pointer to give MU its first lead of the game and Rivera's put back made it 80-75.
Fields converted a Rodway steal into a layup and Harding's free throw finished a 20-2 run that gave the Cougars an 82-76 lead with 6:13 to go.
Eastern scored eight consecutive points to regain the lead, 84-83, but Rivera tied it with a free throw at 4:51.
Rodway's steal led to a 3-on-1 break and a Harding layup for a 90-88 led with less than three minutes to go.
Fields buried a three-pointer to make it 93-90 and Rodway grabbed his own miss to find Fields for a back door layup to give the Cougars a 95-92 lead with 1:00 remaining.
The Cougars fell to 10-4 overall and 1-2 in the MAC Freedom.
