Jason Kenny scored 27 points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished out seven assists in an MVP performance as the Misericordia men's basketball team defeated host Muhlenberg 104-99 to win their first ever Scotty Wood Tournament title.
Tyerell Mann added 26 points on 11-14 shooting and
Noah Rivera went 8-10 to score 22 points.
Tre Fields led the team in rebounding for the second straight game with 11 while also adding 19 points and was named to the all-tournament team as well for his efforts.
The Cougars shot 52.9% from the field and outrebounded the Mules 41-37.
After a frenetic first six minutes, the Cougars led 24-17. Mann hit his first four shots and had 10 early points while
Alec Rodway pitched in with six points.
Fields was also hot early in the game, hitting two threes, to go along with a layup for eight points.
Misericordia built a 45-22 lead with 7:49 to go in the half, but a 19-6 Muhlenberg run cut the Cougar lead to 10.
On the last shot of the half, Kenny was fouled shooting a three-pointer and converted all three free throws to give the Cougars a 65-52 lead at the break. Kenny, Fields, Mann, and Rivera were all in double figures after 20 minutes of play.
Coming out of the locker room, the Cougars went on a 6-0 run, which included a dunk by Mann, to build their lead back up to 19.
Muhlenberg kept crawling their way back into the game to get to within 10 at 79-69, but a three-point play by Kenny halted their momentum for the time being and started a 7-0 run for the Cougars.
However, the Mules kept fighting back and cut the Misericordia lead to five after Matt Gnias hit two free throws with 4:13 left in the game, but the Cougars kept answering, this time on a
Noah Rivera three-point play on the next possession.
Again, the Mules responded, scoring the next seven points to get to within one with 29.9 seconds to play.
Kenny converted one of two free throws on the next possession, but two missed layups by the Mules and a big defensive rebound by Mann led to him being fouled with 12 seconds left. Mann hit both foul shots to seal the game for the Cougars.
Misericordia will host Rosemont, Tuesday.
