Rachel Carmody keyed a big fourth quarter as the Misericordia University women's basketball team completed a season sweep of Eastern with a 68-57 win, Wednesday night at the Anderson Center.
Carmody scored nine points in a three-minute span and finished 14 points and 10 rebounds.Â
Justine Seely had a game-high 22 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks and
Japriya Carroll added 14 points and five assists.
The Cougars improved to 13-6 overall and 7-2 in the MAC Freedom and are alone in third place in the MAC Freedom.
Leading 51-49, Carmody scored off an inbounds pass from Carroll. Following an Eastern basket, Carmody drained a three-pointer from the right wing with the shot clock winding down for a 56-51 lead with 3:12 to play.
After two free throws by Eastern, Carmody nailed a baseline jumper to put MU up, 58-53, with 2:35 remaining.
Carroll added two free throws and Carmody buried a jumper from just inside the key to stretch the lead to 62-53 with 1:29 left.
The Eagles opened the game with an 8-2 run, but the Cougars answered with seven straight points, including a three-pointer by Carroll, to take a 9-8 lead.
Eastern got a late three-pointer to take a 17-13 lead after one quarter.
Jackie Hajec and Seely both sank two free throws to cap an 8-0 run that gave MU a 26-19 lead late in the second quarter. Seely's driving layup and
Leanne Forsyth's short jumper off the glass gave the Cougars a 32-24 halftime lead.
The teams traded baskets throughout the third quarter and MU led, 43-41, to set up Carmody's fourth-quarter heroics.
Misericordia will travel to Delaware Valley, Saturday.
