MU Baseball Ends Trip With a Win

Box Score The Misericordia University baseball team ended its spring break trip with a 9-4 win over SUNY-Maritime, Saturday morning in Fort Pierce, FL.

Kenny Jarema reached base five times and had three hits and drove in three runs to lead the Cougars.  Conor Smith had two hits and two RBI and Alec Iurato added a two-run double.

Santo Guinta had two hits and scored two runs.

Tim Burek struck out eight over five innings to get the win and Brett Davis tossed two shutout innings in relief to get the save.

The Cougars jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first.  Jarema singled to right, stole second and came home on Smith's single through the right side.  Smith stole second and scored on Iurato's double down the right field line.

Tyler Holzapfel tripled to left center and scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.

The Cougars added a run in the fifth when Billy Kerwein reached via hit by pitch with one out and moved up on Jarema's infield single.  Smith followed with a single to left center to put MU ahead, 5-0.

Guinta led off the sixth with a single through the left side and advanced when Jeremy DeCotiis was hit by a pitch.  Kerwein reached on an error on his sacrifice bunt to load the bases and Jarema walked to force in a run.  After a force out at home on a fielder's choice, Iurato walked to give the Cougars a 7-3 lead.

Maritime scored in the bottom of the seventh, but the Cougars added a pair of runs in the top of the ninth.  Steve Weisensee reached on a bunt single and Guinta reached on a fielder's choice.  Kerwein's two-out walk loaded the bases and Jarema singled up the middle to make it 9-4.
