The Misericordia University baseball team finished off a sweep of Wilkes with a 17-7 win, Monday afternoon at Artillery Park.
Brett Davis,
Conor Smith,
Billy Kerwien and
Parker Abate all had three hits while
Kenny Jarema and
Tyler Holzapfel both had two hits.
Smith had three RBI while Davis, Jarema and Holzapfel all drove in two runs.
Kerwien belted a solo homer in the sixth inning while Smith had three doubles and Jarema had two doubles.
Jake Kurtz worked five innings to earn the win and
Kyle Melahn and
Steve Pabon combined for 2.1 innings of shutout relief to close the game.
Wilkes took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the Cougars answered with three runs in the top of the second.Â
Steve Weisensee reached on an infield single with one out and scored on consecutive errors as Kerwien and Abate reached base. Davis reached on an RBI-bunt single and Jarema gave the Cougars the lead with an RBI-double to right.
Wilkes scored a run in the second and third innings to go back in front, 4-3.
Davis drew a leadoff walk and scored on Smith's double down the left field line to knot the score, 4-4.
Wilkes went ahead 5-4 in the bottom the frame, but the Cougars went ahead for good with four runs in the top of the fifth.
Abate reached on a bunt single with one out and moved to second on Davis' single through the left side. Jarema reached via hit by pitch to load the bases and Smith drove in two runs with a double to left center. Holzapfel followed with an RBI-single to left and
Sean Lyons added a sacrifice fly to give the Cougars an 8-5 lead.
Wilkes went down in order in their half of the fifth and the Cougars added four more runs in the sixth.
With one down, Kerwien homered to left. Abate walked, stole second and scored a Davis' RBI-double. After a pitching change, Jarema doubled down the right field to drive in a run and later scored on Holzapfel's single through the right side to make it 12-5.
The Cougars added four more runs in the top of the ninth.Â
Jeremy DeCotiis led off with a double and eventually scored when Jon Juri reached on an error.Â
Logan LaRochelle followed with an RBI-double and
Evan Bush made it 17-7 with a two-out RBI-single as the Cougars batted around.
The Cougars are 14-6 overall and 7-1 in the MAC Freedom and will host Moravian in a non-conference tilt, Tuesday at 4:00.
