Box Score 2 The Misericordia University baseball team split a doubleheader at King's, Thursday. After dropping the opener, 3-2, the Cougars took the nightcap, 7-2.
In game one Billy Kerwein and
Parker Abate both had hits and drove in a run while
Jeremy DeCotiis scored both runs for MU.
Garrett Pelko struck out three and allowed just two hits and one run in six innings, but King's rallied for three runs over the final two innings.
Tim Burek came on in the seventh and absorbed the loss.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the second when DeCotiis drew a one-out walk and moved to second on Kerwien's walk with two away. Abate followed with a single to left to give the Cougars the lead.
DeCotiis walked again with one down in the top of the fourth and scored on Kerwien's two-out double down the left field line to make it 2-0.
The score held until King's got a two-out run in the bottom of the sixth. The Monarchs got a two-out walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.
In game two,
Tyler Holzapfel had three hits and three RBI and
Kenny Jarema had three hits and drove in two runs.
Conor Smith had two hits and scored twice and DeCotiis had a hit and two RBI.
Zach Mason struck out five over six innings while allowing just three hits and two runs to earn the win.
Steve Pabon came on to work a perfect seventh inning as the Cougars improved to 17-7 overall and 9-2 in the MAC Freedom.
The Cougars got on the board on back-to-back doubles by Smith and Holzapfel in the top of the first inning. DeCotiis added an RBI-double to left center with two down to give MU a 2-0 lead.
Brett Davis singled through the left side with two outs in the second and came around on Jarema's double to left field to make it 3-0.
Holzapfel singled to lead off the third inning and moved up on a wild pitch. After advancing on a ground out, he came home on DeCotiis' squeeze bunt for a 4-0 lead.
Kerwien drew a walk to lead off the fourth inning and moved up on Abate's single through the left side. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Davis and Jarema singled through the left side to make it 5-0.
After King's got a pair of runs back, the Cougars answered with a two-run, two-out rally in the sixth. Jarema singled to left field and moved up on Smith's infield single. Holzapfel tripled to right center to put MU up 7-2.
The Cougars will host FDU-Florham, Monday at 3:30.
