The Misericordia University baseball team a banged out 24 hits, including 10 straight in a 10-run fourth inning, en route to a 21-3 win over FDU-Florham, Monday afternoon at Tambur Field.
Conor Smith had two hits and three RBI and
Kenny Jarema and
Chad Bell both had two hits and drove in two runs.Â
Tyler Holzapfel,
Sean Lyons,
Scott Carton, Billy Kerwin,
Parker Abate and
Steve Weisensee all added two hits for the Cougars.
Alec St. Pier and
Evan Bush both had two RBI.
Jake Kurtz struck out five while scattering seven hits over five innings to earn the win.Â
Tim Burek,
Curt Jorgensen and
James Magaldi all worked a scoreless inning of relief.
After FDU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, the Cougars answered with 10 runs on 10 consecutive hits in their half of the frame.Â
Sean Lyons started the rally with an infield single in the shortstop hole.Â
Jeremy DeCotiis bounced a single through the right side and
Alec St. Pier lined a two-run double down the right field line to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead.Â
Billy Kerwien laced the first pitch through the left side and raced to third with DeCotiis scoring on an errant pick-off attempt.Â
Parker Abate singled to center to make it 4-1 and back-to-back singles by
Brett Davis and
Kenny Jarema gave the Cougars a 5-1 lead. Following a pitching change and a double steal,
Conor Smith bounced a single through a drawn-in infield to drive in two more runs.Â
Tyler Holzapfel blooped a single to center and
Sean Lyons singled up the middle to end the hits streak and drive in a run and make it 8-1. The Cougars added two more runs on an FDU error to take a 10-1 lead.
The Devils got two hits to open the top of the fifth inning, but Kurtz got three straight strikeouts to escape the jam.
Misericordia added a run in the bottom of the fifth when Abate reached on an infield single and moved to third on a ground out and wild pitch.Â
Conor Smith beat out an infield single to make it 11-1.
The Cougars added eight more runs in the seventh. Bell had a pair of RBI-hits in the frame and Jarema,
Scott Carton and Bush also had run-scoring hits in the inning.
Misericordia, 18-7, will travel to Arcadia for a non-conference game, Tuesday.
