The Misericordia University baseball team split a doubleheader at Delaware Valley, Sunday.
After dropping the opener, 7-3, the Cougars took the nightcap, 11-3.
The Aggies used a five-run fifth inning to win the first game.Â
Tyler Holzapfel led the Cougars with two hits.Â
Elliot Forde worked three perfect innings of relief while
Garrett Pelko absorbed the loss after working into the fifth inning.
In game two,
Steve Weisensee had three hits and three RBI, including a two-run double. Holzapfel had two hits and two RBI and
Sean Lyons had a two-run double.
Tim Burek struck out five in five innings while allowing just three hits to earn the win.Â
Brett Davis and
Corey Bond both tossed a perfect inning in relief as the Cougars improved to 11-5 overall and 4-1 in the MAC Freedom.
The Cougars jumped in front with a four-run first inning and added three more in the second.
After Del Val took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in the opener, the Cougars cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second.Â
Jeremy DeCotiis reached via hit by pitch with one out, stole second and moved to third on a ground out before scoring on an error.
MU went ahead with two runs in the fourth. Holzapfel led off with a double to left center and after
Alec St. Pier walked, both runners moved up a sacrifice bunt by DeCotiis. With two down, both runners scored on back-to-back wild pitches to give MU a 3-2 lead.
But the Aggies scored five times in the top of the fifth to secure the win.
In game two, Jarema reached second on an error to lead off the bottom of the first and scored on Holzapfel's single through the left side.Â
Santo Guinta singled through the same hole and Lyons' two-out double plated both runners for a 3-0 lead. Weisensee singled to right to make it 4-0.
MU added three more runs in the second. Billy Kerwein drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on
Conor Smith's one-out single up the middle. Holzapfel singled up the middle to drive in a run and Guinta followed with an RBI-ground out. Holzapfel moved to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a throwing error by the catcher to make it 7-0.
Jarema and Smith both drew walks to open the fifth inning, but Smith was erased on a double play. Guinta was hit by a pitch and stole second with Jarema scoring on a throwing error. DeCotiis and Lyons walked to load the bases and Weisensee doubled to left center to give the Cougars an 11-3 lead.
MU will host FDU-Florham, Tuesday.
