Cougars Beat Del Val to Clinch Top Seed

The Misericordia University men's lacrosse team clinched the top seed in the MAC Freedom tournament with a 16-13 win at Delaware Valley, Tuesday evening.

Sean McSwiggan led MU with four goals and two assists and Pat Kellish added two goals and two assists.

Jake Kocovsky had three goals and Chris Fleming added two goals and an assist.

Brandon Winslow added a goal and two assists.

John Tierney had eight ground balls and six caused turnovers.

Ryan Romaine won the opening face-off and gave the Cougars the lead just 14 seconds into the game.

The Aggies tallied a man-up goal midway through the first quarter and Pat Kellish answered for MU with 5:44 to go.

Del Val pulled even with 1:11 left in the opening stanza.

McSwiggan and Fleming scored early in the second quarter, but the Aggies scored a pair of goals in a 15-second span to tie the score, 4-4.

The Cougars went ahead for good as Fleming started a 5-0 run with 8:40 left in the second quarter.  Kyle Reese, McSwiggan, Jake Kocovsky and Patrick DeMichele added goals to give MU a 9-4 lead with 1:49 to play in the second period.

The Aggies got on back in the final minute of the half.

Kellish tallied a man-up goal midway through the third quarter and McSwiggan made it 11-6 with 5:47 left.

The Aggies scored five seconds after the ensuing face-off and added a goal with :40 remaining in the third period to get within 11-8.

Kocovsky scored 30 seconds later to make it 12-8.

McSwiggan put MU ahead 13-8 with 10:35 remaining in the game, but the Aggies struck three times in the next minute to cut the MU lead to 13-11.

Misericordia responded with three straight goals in a three-minute span to take 16-11 lead.

The Cougars won their sixth straight game to improve to 9-3 overall and 6-0 in the MAC Freedom.
