MU Men Hand Eastern First League Loss in Five Years

The Misericordia University men's lacrosse team opened MAC Freedom play with an impressive 7-6 win over Eastern, Wednesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.

Brandon Winslow and Chris Fleming both scored twice as the Cougars snapped Eastern's five-year unbeaten streak in the MAC Freedom.

Pat Kellish, Jake Kocovsky and Kyle Reese all added goals and Antonio Whyte made 12 saves to earn his first career win in goal.

Fleming had a team-high nine ground balls and Kocovsky was 5-for-8 on face-offs.

Eastern took a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game, but the Cougars with four straight goals and never trailed again.

Fleming fired a shot from the right wing inside the far post to the game, 1-1, with 5:03 left in the opening quarter.

Kocovsky drove the right side and shot across the crease to put MU ahead, 2-1, just over a minute later.

Following a scramble near midfield, Fleming scooped up a loose ball near midfield and scored in an empty net to make it 3-1 late in the first period.

MU killed off a two-man down penalty early in the second quarter and Winslow followed with a nifty reverse-goal for a 4-1 lead with 12:53 to go in the first half.

Eastern scored late in the second quarter to cut the deficit in half.

Pat Kellish scored for MU as the teams traded goals in the third quarter and the Cougars led 5-3 heading to the fourth quarter.

Fleming found Winslow near the left post for a man-up goal and a 6-3 lead midway through the final stanza.

Following an Eastern man-up goal, Winslow fed Reese to give the Cougars a 6-4 lead with 4:01 remaining.

Eastern scored twice in the final minute to pull within a goal with :17 to go, but Andrew Phillips scooped up a ground ball on the final face-off to secure the win.
