Cougars Cruise Past Mighty Macs

The Misericordia University baseball team beat Immaculata, 12-5, on a windy Wednesday afternoon at Tambur Field.

Kenny Jarema went 2-4 with a homer, a double, three RBI, a walk and a run scored. Steve Weisensee went 2-3 with an RBI, three walks, three stolen bases and two runs scored. Parker Abate went 2-4 with a double, an RBI, a stolen base, and three runs scored. Billy Kerwien went 3-4 with a double, a stolen base, an RBI and two runs scored.

The Mighty Macs scored first on an RBI double to left center. MU responded in the bottom half of the inning.

DeCotiis drew a walk with one out and Jarema followed by smashing a double off the wall in right field to score DeCotiis.

Immaculata put up three in the second to take a 4-1 lead. Abate led off the inning by smacking a ball into shallow center that the outfielder lost in the sun as Abate hustled to second for a well-earned double. MU went on to capitalize on a throwing error by the shortstop and Jarema pushed a run across on a groundout to second with the bases loaded to make it 4-3 after two.

Misericordia scored twice in the bottom of the third to take their first lead of the game at 5-4.

In the top of the fourth, Parker Abate made an impressive diving catch in deep center as he bobbled the ball but managed to corral it before he crashed to the ground.

MU scored four runs over the next two innings, including a Jarema solo blast to right in the fifth as the Cougars opened up a 9-4 lead after five.

A single to left by Kerwien scored Abate from second in the sixth to make it 10-4. A sac fly to right by Immaculata in the eighth made it 10-5.

In the bottom half of the inning with the bases loaded, Tyler Holzapfel reached on an error by the pitcher. Weisensee followed that up with an infield single to make it 12-5.

James Magaldi entered in the ninth for MU and made quick work of the Mighty Macs. The first batter flew out to right, the second batter struck out swinging and the final batter struck out looking.

MU drew six walks and also had five different batters get hit by a pitch.

MU improves to 25-12 and will play at Manhattanville, Thursday at 4:00.
