The Misericordia University women's basketball team got their first MAC Freedom win this season by defeating Eastern, 67-52, Wednesday night at the Anderson Center. The Cougars are now 8-5 and 1-1 in conference while the Eagles drop to 3-10 and 0-3 in the MAC Freedom.
Rachel Carmody and Paige Wampole each posted double-doubles. Carmody had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Wampole had 12 points and 10 boards. Quintessa Zamolyi added 11 points and nine rebounds and Leanne Forsyth dished out six assists.
Misericordia outrebounded the Eagles, 55-30, including 23-7 on the offensive glass.
The Cougars took some early momentum when Zamolyi converted a three-point play with 6:48 to go in the first quarter to take a 5-4 lead. With five seconds to go in the quarter, Carmody stole the inbounds pass and layed it in to give Misericordia a 16-13 lead after one period.
The Cougars started the second quarter on a 9-2 run culminating on a Wampole layup after grabbing one of her six offensive rebounds in the game. The Eagles got back to within five, but the Cougars built their lead back up to 10 on a layup by Forsyth with two seconds to go.
The Misericordia lead remained around 10 the entire third quarter until the Cougars ended the period on a 7-0 run, getting baskets from Carmody, Wampole, and Forsyth.
The Eagles did not go away in the fourth as they cut the Cougar lead to eight points with 5:18 to play, but Misericordia ended the game on an 11-4 run as they eased to victory.
The Cougars are back in action, Saturday when they travel to Delaware Valley to take on the Aggies at 1:00.
