Szczerba Tallies Three Assists in Win at Delaware Valley

The Misericordia University men's soccer team improved to 2-2 in the MAC Freedom with a commanding victory at Delaware Valley, 3-0, Saturday.

Nick Szczerba connected with three different teammates for a season-best three assists while John Caracappa, Ethan Benedict and Bryson Smith each netted their first goals of the season.

The Cougars controlled the majority of play with a 15-6 shots advantage and a 10-2 edge in shots on goal.

Caracappa got things started when he tapped in a Szczerba cross pass from inside the box after Vincenzo Diliberti carried the ball upfield in the 5th minute. It was the sophomore midfielder's first career goal.

In the 11th minute, Szczerba led Benedict to the net with a beautiful back heel pass for his first collegiate score. The play was set up by a 35-yard pass from Diliberti from the opposite side of the field. Benedict controlled the long pass and fed the ball to Szczerba, who then gave Benedict a quick return pass.

After a Dominic Pizzi goal kick deflected off a defender's head, Szczerba controlled possession and connected with Smith on a through ball in the 22nd minute. Smith beat the goalkeeper through his legs from 16 yards out for his second career goal.

Pizzi made two saves en route to his second shutout of the season. The sophomore keeper's biggest save came in the 15th minute when he denied a Patrick Lawler breakaway with a diving stop.

The Cougars improve to 3-9-1 on the season while the Aggies fall to 3-10 overall and 0-4 in the MAC Freedom. Misericordia will continue conference play at Wilkes, Wednesday.
