The Misericordia University women's volleyball team honored seniors
Kaitlin Wheeler and
Tara Welliver with a sweep of Farmingdale State and Eastern Connecticut State on Senior Appreciation Day, Saturday afternoon at the Anderson Center.
Junior setter
Karley May had 84 assists on the day to set a new school single-season record with 946 assists.
In a 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-22) win over Farmingdale,
Sarah Pool had 11 kills and Wheeler had 11 digs while May had 34 assists and five aces.
In a 3-2 win over Eastern Connecticut State,
Jassmine Watson had a team-high 18 kills and Pool added 13 kills.
After dropping the opener, 25-19, the Cougars took two straight, 25-17, 25-21 before the Warriors rallied for a 26-24 win to force a fifth set.
The Cougars clinched the win with a 16-14 victory.
Welliver had 12 kills, four aces and five blocks while
Jessica Oltman and
Amanda Curcio had six blocks each.
Wheeler added 18 digs and May had 50 assists.
In the second set, Curcio's kill from a tough angle on the right side gave the Cougars a 16-15 lead.
Oltman's ace made it 17-15.
After an ECSU kill, Pool had two kills to key a 5-0 run to give MU a 22-16 lead.
Pool made it 23-17 with a cross court kill from the left side.
Welliver's kill and an ECSU error ended the set.
The Cougars used a 6-0 run to take a 17-13 lead in the third set with Curcio's dink on the right side capping the spurt.
Oltman and Curcio had back-to-back kills to close out the set.
Welliver's kill through two middle blockers gave MU a 23-22 lead in the fourth set. A Warriors' error made it 24-22, but ECSU rallied to score four straight points to win 26-24.
Watson and Pool both had kills as the Cougars scored six straight points to take a 6-2 lead in the fifth set.
The Warriors rallied back to take a 10-9 lead, but MU answered with three straight points.
Tied 14-14, Welliver's smash from the middle inside the left line gave the Cougars the lead.
Welliver's rip inside the right line gave the Cougars a 16-14 win to clinch the match.
The Cougars are 18-9 and will visit King's, Tuesday.
