Box Score The Misericordia University men's soccer team was outscored 4-1 in the second half as they fell to Eastern University, 5-2, in the MAC Freedom Semifinals, Tuesday in St. Davids, PA.
The Cougars took a 1-1 draw into halftime, but couldn't overcome a second half surge from the Eagles.
First-year midfielder
Joseph Crisafi opened the scoring with his first collegiate goal in the 24
th minute. The play was generated off a
Levi Roberts free kick from approximately 65-yards out.
Roberts played the ball to
Ethan Aigeldinger, who headed a pass into traffic toward the net. Aigeldinger's ball was gathered by an Eagle defender, but Eastern's clear attempt was intercepted by Crisafi, who beat the goalkeeper low to the near post.
Eastern answered back with an equalizer in the 35
th minute courtesy of Cade Harmon. The senior midfielder tallied his sixth goal of the season on a through ball from Bryce Wahinya.
Misericordia's defense made several key defensive stops to keep the game knotted heading into halftime.
Early in the contest, the Cougars fought off an Eastern free kick from 20-yards out. Colin Furlong took the strike, but had his shot blocked by a wall of Cougar defenders, who gathered and cleared the attempt in the fourth minute.
Later in the half,
Connor McCarthy intercepted an Eagle cross and deflected the shot out of bounds to deny Eastern of an excellent scoring chance in the 27
th minute.
Eastern quickly added two goals early in the second half to give the Eagles a 3-1 advantage. Billy Walenda tallied the first score in the 49
th minute while Julio Ardon scored in the 51
st minute.
Moments later, the Cougars cut Eastern's lead in half on a goal from
John Caracappa in the 54
th minute. The sophomore midfielder beat the keeper to the far post after collecting a
Nick Szczerba rebound that deflected off an Eastern defender from the opposite side of the box.
Andrew Daubenspeck kept the Cougars within striking distance with a phenomenal diving save to deny Cade Harmon in the 54
th minute. However, the Eagles were able to tack on two insurance goals in the 74
th and 77
th minutes to put the game out of reach.
Misericordia ends the season with a 5-12-1 record while Eastern advances to the MAC Freedom Championship to host the winner of #3 Manhattanville versus #2 King's College.
