MU Women Improve to 3-0

Japriya Carroll scored 18 points to lead three players in double figures as the Misericordia University women's basketball team improved to 3-0 with a 65-41 win at Mt. St. Mary, Saturday.

Rachel Carmody had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Tessa Zamolyi added 13 points and seven rebounds.

Kalynn Sefcik had eight points, five assists and five steals and Jordan Barth had eight rebounds.

The Cougars trailed 14-9 after the opening quarter, but took control of the game with a 30-11 second-quarter outburst.

Trailing 14-5, MU closed the first quarter on back-to-back baskets by Carmody in the final minute.

Carmody's layup capped a 6-0 run to open the second period and gave the Cougars their first lead, 15-14, with 7:36 left in the first half.

The Knights went back in front, 19-15, but MU responded with a 15-2 run over the next four minutes.

Carroll's three-pointer gave the Cougars a 24-21 lead and Zamolyi had a three-pointer and a jumper to make it 39-21 with 2:51 to go.

A free throw by Paige Wampole with 1:09 remaining ignited a 7-0 spurt to end the half.

Zamolyi made back-to-back layups and Sefcik made two free throws as the Cougars took a 39-25 lead into intermission.

Mt. St. Mary pulled within eight points after three quarters, but MU responded with a 13-0 run early in the middle of the fourth quarter.

Carroll buried a jumper and converted a steal into a three-pointer for a 53-39 lead.

Carroll nailed another three-pointer and Wampole added a free throw to stretch the lead to 61-39 with 3:48 to go.

The Cougars will visit the College of Staten Island, Tuesday.
