The Misericordia University men's basketball team battled back from a second half deficit to defeat Susquehanna, 91-87, in overtime, Wednesday in Selinsgrove, PA.
Jason Kenny led all scorers with a season-best 29 points and six assists while shooting 12-16 from the free throw line and 57.1 percent from the field.
Stone McCreary came up huge for the Cougars with a season-best 23 points and five three-pointers, including a clutch three with eight seconds remaining to force overtime.
Following a Misericordia timeout with 13 seconds left in regulation, McCreary drained a fadeaway three-pointer from the top of the key to send the game into overtime. McCreary came off a Kenny screen, fooled his defender with a pump fake and sunk the open bucket to knot the game at 77.
Tony Harding helped take over in overtime with a couple clutch buckets, which accounted for the Cougars' first five points. The forward got things going with an offensive rebound and a three-pointer in the team's first possession of overtime to put the Cougars up 80-77.
After surrendering their early lead to Susquehanna, Harding helped the Cougars re-establish themselves with a much-needed layup to tie the game at 82. Misericordia never trailed from that point on.
With seven seconds remaining in overtime and the Cougars up two points,
Noah Rivera helped put the game away with a defensive stop followed by a rebound. Rivera contested Matt LaCorte without fouling as the Red Hawk drove from the baseline in search of contact.
Kenny sunk three free throws in the final four seconds to ice the game for Misericordia.
Despite never trailing in the first half, the Cougars were faced with a second half deficit, which grew as large as 10 points.
The Cougars began to chip away at the Red Hawks' lead when McCreary drained a three-pointer to bring the game within seven points with 8:20 remaining. Kenny then responded with a left-handed layup on the following drive to pull within five points.
Moments later, Harding sunk two free throws to create a one possession game, which forced Susquehanna to burn a timeout. The Cougars 7-0 run helped quiet the Red Hawks following the team's 23-12 rally to start the second half.
After falling behind five points following Susquehanna's timeout, McCreary responded with a corner three to bring the game within two points as five minutes remained in regulation.
The Red Hawks eventually built their lead up to nine points, before McCreary answered with another three-pointer to shorten the deficit to six points with 2:19 left. The Cougars then pulled off an 11-5 run in the final two minutes to force overtime.
Foster Clark and Kenny both aided the run with four points while McCreary added two threes over the span.
Harding ended the game with 16 points while Rivera was the fourth Cougar in double figures with 10.
The Cougars improved to 4-1 while the Red Hawks fell to 2-2 overall. Misericordia returns home on Monday to face Neumann University before traveling to Wilkes on the following Wednesday to open its MAC Freedom schedule.
