The Misericordia University men's basketball team couldn't overcome a late surge by the Devils as they fell to FDU-Florham, 72-61, Saturday in Madison, NJ.
Jason Kenny led the Cougars in scoring with 14 points while shooting 6-13 from the field.
Tony Harding was second on the squad with 13 points and
Stone McCreary tallied nine points with three three-pointers.
Harding brought the Cougars within one point when he drained a three-pointer with 2:16 remaining. However, Andy Fleurantin responded with three-pointers on consecutive possessions to expand the Devils' lead to seven points.
Moments later, McCreary gave the Cougars hope with a three ball of his own to shrink Misericordia's deficit to four points with 1:15 remaining. The Devils then answered the Cougars' threat with another three-pointer courtesy of Fleurantin to expand FDU's lead to 68-61.
The Devils' guard was 1-6 from deep heading into the final three minutes, but finished the contest with four straight three-pointers to ice the game. Misericordia was outscored 10-3 in the final two minutes.
After heading into halftime knotted at 28 points, Misericordia came out of the break hot with a Kenny three-pointer on their opening possession. Harding then added two more points with a layup to take a 33-28 lead.
The Devils made it a one possession game with a layup from Rajaan Dixon until Kenny and McCreary connected from deep on back-to-back drives to put Misericordia up nine points, which was its largest lead of the contest.
The Cougars' last lead came with 6:16 remaining when
Brendan Leonard gave his team a 50-49 advantage with a layup. Tyler Christie then answered back with a layup of his own, and the Devils never surrendered the lead.
The game saw eight lead changes and three ties. The Cougars shot 34.6 percent (9-26) from deep while the Devils shot 50 percent (12-24) and 48 percent from the field.
The Cougars fell to 0-2 in the MAC Freedom and 4-4 overall. Misericordia will look to bounce back next Sunday at Rosemont College.
