The Misericordia University baseball team opened the season with a sweep of a doubleheader at #12 Shenandoah, Friday night.
The Cougars won the opener, 5-4, and took game two, 3-1.
Jake Kurtz tossed 5.2 innings of no-hit ball in the opener and
Kenny Jarema drove in a pair of runs.Â
Tyler Holzapfel added two hits and
Steve Weisensee,
Santo Guinta and
Parker Abate all added RBI.
Shenandoah didn't get its first hit until they put together a two-out rally in bottom of the sixth inning.Â
Michael Turton worked the final 1.1 to get the save.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the fourth and added four more in the fifth.
Holzapfel led off the fourth inning with a double to center and came around with the game's first run on Abate's two-out single to center.
Jonathan Juri singled to lead off the sixth, moved to second on a balk and went to third on a sacrifice bunt. Weisensee single in a run and Jarema homered down the right field line one out later to make it 4-0.
Holzapfel rapped his second double of the game and scored on Guinta's single to right for a 5-0 lead.
The Hornets loaded the bases without a hit in the bottom of the sixth on a hit by pitch, walk and error. A sacrifice fly got Shenandoah on the board and another walk re-loaded the bases and ended the night for Kurtz.
The Hornets to their first two hits of the game to within 5-4, but Turton induced a ground out to end the frame.
After a single to start the bottom of the seventh, Turton retired the next three batters for the save.
In game two,
Elliot Forde and
Kyle Melahn combined on a three-hitter and the Cougars made the most of their lone hit.
Conor Smith had MU's only hit while Jarema and Dalton Emerich had RBI.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the third and added two insurance runs in the sixth.
Weisensee drew a one-out walk and moved to second on Smith's single to right. After both runners moved up on a wild pitch, Jarema plated Weisensee with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Cougars manufactured a pair of runs with a two-out rally in the sixth. Holzapfel was hit by a pitch and walked before Sean Boylan reached via HBP to load the bases.
Abate reached on an error to score Holzapfel and Emerich forced in a run when he was hit by a pitch.
The Hornets got on the board with a pair of hits in the sixth, but Forde induced a double play to end the inning.
Melahn worked a perfect seventh for the save.
