MU Baseball Opens Trip With Split

The Misericordia University baseball team split a pair of to open its spring trip, Sunday.

The Cougars lost to Lebanon Valley, 12-6, and beat Kenyon, 15-4.

In the opener, Tyler Holzapfel had two hits and two RBI and Parker Abate and Sean Boylan both had two hits.

Holzapfel, Santo Guinta, Jonathan Juri and Shane Hughes all had doubles.

MU went ahead 4-1 with a three-run fourth inning.  With two outs, Steve Weisensee singled, stole second and moved to third on Abate's single.  Kenny Jarema singled to drive in a run and both runners moved up on an error.  Holzapfel drove in a pair of runs with a double.

After Leb Val rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars got one back in the fifth.  Juri reached via hit by pitch with one out and came around to score on a double by Hughes.

The Dutchmen rallied for seven runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

In the nightcap, MU rallied for 12 runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

Weisensee and Boylan both had three hits while Conor Smith had two hits and four RBI.  Jarema had two hits and drove in three runs and Holzapfel and Guinta both had two hits.

Drake Koch struck out 11 over 6.1 innings and Ian McCole picked up the win with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.

Trailing 1-0, MU pulled even in the bottom of the third.  Boylan led off with a single through the left side and eventually scored on Smith's two-out single to left.

The Cougars made it 3-2 in the fifth.  Boylan singled up the middle, moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored on Weisensee's single to right field.  One out later, Jarema doubled to right center to plate Weisensee.

Down 4-3, MU struck for five runs in the seventh and added seven more in the eighth.  Jarema had a two-run double to start the scoring in the seventh and Guinta and Abate both added RBI-doubles.

Shane Hughes had a two-run single in the eighth and Smith ended the scoring with a bases-loaded triple.
