Patrick Kellish and
Chris Fleming both scored three goals each to lead the Misericordia University men's lacrosse team to a 10-5 win over Oneonta in their season opener, Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.
Patrick Luzzi added two goals and an assist in his collegiate debut and
Jake Kocovsky had a goal and two assists.
Fleming picked up a team-high nine groundballs and
John Tierney had five groundballs and a caused turnover.
Antonio Whyte made two saves in goal and collected four groundballs and
Robert Wagner had four groundballs.
Oneonta grabbed an early lead, but Fleming answered with a man-up goal inside the right post on a tough-angle shot with 10:16 left in the first period. Luzzi added his first collegiate goal less than a minute later and Kellish scored late in the quarter for a 3-1 lead after one stanza.
Kellish scored midway through the second period, but Oneonta got a man-up goal late in the half and MU led 4-2 at halftime.
Up 5-3, the Cougars scored three times in four minute span late in third quarter to take an 8-3 lead.
The Red Dragons got within 8-5 early in the fourth period, but Fleming answered with a man-up goal and Kellish closed out the scoring in the final minute.
Misericordia will host Keystone, Wednesday at 4:00.
