Cougars Drop Tight Games Against John Carroll, Ohio Northern

The Misericordia softball team dropped two one-run games against John Carroll and Ohio Northern, Tuesday in Kissimmee, Florida.

Against John Carroll, Amanda Butera continued her hot hitting, going 3-4 with an RBI, raising her batting average to .520 on the season. Jessica Pluta had two hits and a run scored and Ciara DeLong scored twice.

The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Maddie Holub walked and Pluta hit a double to get on base and each scored on an error by the Blue Streak left fielder.

After John Carroll put up a run in the bottom of the first, Misericordia scored twice more in the top of the second when Abby Marzzacco scored on an error and DeLong scored on a sacrifice fly by Holub.

The Blue Streaks scored four times in the bottom half of the inning, but again the Cougars came back with four of their own in the third, with Brooke Moyle scoring on a wild pitch and Jessie McDonough coming home on a fielder's choice sandwiched around RBI singles from Marzzacco and Butera.

Misericordia held onto the lead until the bottom of the sixth when the Blue Streaks put up two runs to take a 9-8 lead. The Cougars got the tying run to second in the top of the seventh, but Raegan Mahoney was stranded there as John Carroll held on for the victory.

In the second game, the Cougars dropped a tight contest to Ohio Northern, 5-4.

Lori Brennan went 2-4 with three RBIs. Holub went 2-4 with two runs scored and Pluta also had two hits with one run scored.

The Polar Bears jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and extended their lead to 2-0 in the third. Misericordia got a run back in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Brennan.

The Cougars took the lead in the fifth scoring three runs, including two on a double by Brennan. However, they could not hold onto the lead as Ohio Northern scored two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.

MU has the day off tomorrow before continuing their Florida trip, Thursday when they play Bridgewater at 9:00 and Penn State-Berks at 1:30.
