The Misericordia University baseball team took both ends of a doubleheader at Manhattanville, Saturday, to complete a three-game sweep of the Valiants.
Santo Guinta had a double and a double and four RBI in an 8-4 win in the opener.Â
Sean Boylan had two hits and two RBI and
Kenny Jarema had two hits.
Drake Koch allowed just five hits over 6.1 innings to earn the win and
Kyle Melahn came on to get the final two outs.
Guinta had two more hits and four more RBI in an 11-2 win in the nightcap.Â
Steve Weisensee had three hits and two RBI and
Parker Abate and
Sean Lyons both had two hits.
Tyler Holzapfel drove in a pair of runs.
Tom Jacob went four innings to get the win and
Dan Zurowski and
James Magaldi for three shutout innings of relief.
After Manhattanville took a 1-0 in the bottom of the second of the opener, the Cougars tied it with a run in the top of third.
Boylan doubled to left field with one out and came around on Jarema's two-out single to right center.
Guinta led off the fourth with a double to left and moved to third on Weisensee's single to right.
Weisensee stole second and both runners came home on Boylan's two-out infield single to make it 3-1.
The Cougars made it 4-1 in the fifth on Weisensee's sacrifice fly to center.
After the Valiants got a run back in the sixth, the Cougars put the game away with four in the seventh.
Jarema and Abate drew back-to-back walks and Holzapfel reached on an error to load the bases in front of Guinta's grand slam to left field.
The Cougars took control early in the nightcap with four runs in each of the first two innings.
With one down, Abate reached on an error and Holzapfel was hit by a pitch before Guinta, Weisensee and Lyons hit back-to-back-to-back doubles for a 4-0 lead.
Adam Concadoro and Jarema walked to open the second inning and Abate doubled to left to make it 5-1.
Holzapfel followed with an RBI-ground out and Guinta singled to left to make it 7-1. Weisensee's double down the right field line put the Cougars ahead, 8-1.

The Cougars improved to 22-10 overall and 14-4 in the MAC Freedom.
