Cougars Victorious Over Rutgers-Camden

The Misericordia baseball team faced a Rutgers-Camden squad on the road that received votes in the latest NCBWA poll and came away victorious, 6-5, Sunday afternoon in Camden, New Jersey.

The Cougars improve to 23-10 this season as the Scarlet Raptors fall to 20-12.

Misericordia used a balanced attack as seven different players had one hit apiece and five players had an RBI.

Elliot Forde improves to 5-0 on the mound this season as he pitched five innings, allowing just three runs, two of them earned, and struck out two. Kyle Rogalski pitched two innings in relief before Kyle Melahn struck out two in the ninth to earn his fifth save of the season.

Camden took a 1-0 in the lead in the first inning and held on to that lead until the fourth. Tyler Holzapfel was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a triple from Steve Weisensee. Sean Lyons gave the Cougars the lead by knocking a single to right field to score Weisensee.

After the Scarlet Raptors tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, Misericordia retook the lead in the sixth as an errant pickoff attempt allowed Sean Boylan to score all the way from second.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Camden scored two in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead, but the Cougars fought back in the seventh, scoring three runs to take a two-run lead. Boylan doubled to lead off the inning followed by a Kenny Jarema walk. Parker Abate tied the game with a double down the left-field line and Holzapefel gave MU the lead with a single through the right side of the infield. Santo Guinta provided a much-needed insurance run with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Rutgers got a run back in the bottom half of the seventh, but that was all they would get the rest of the way as Rogalski and Melahn only faced seven batters to get the final six outs of the game.

The Cougars are back in action, Wednesday when they travel to Scranton to take on the Royals at 5:00.
