The Misericordia University baseball used solid pitching and timely hitting to sweep a doubleheader from King's, Sunday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.
In the opener, the Cougars took advantage of three hit batters and four wild pitches to win, 6-4.
Parker Abate had an RBI-single for the Cougars and
Sean Lyons had a triple.
Tom Jacob worked six innings to earn the win and
Kyle Melahn got the final three outs for the save.
In the nightcap,
Zach Mason allowed just one unearned run over six innings to get the win in a 5-1 victory.Â
Taylor Price came on in the top of the seventh to earn the save.
Tyler Holzapfel had a single and two RBI to pace the Cougars while
Kenny Jarema and
Sean Boylan both scored twice.
In game one, King's put together a two-out rally to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. After
Parker Abate made a diving catch in right center, Matt Mellinger grounded a single up the middle and moved up on a wild pitch. Sean Padded drew a walk and Brad Wilkins lined an RBI-single to right. Sean McKee doubled down the left field line to make it 2-0, but
Dalton Emerich threw Wilkins out at third to end the inning.
Misericordia answered with five runs on just two hits in the bottom of the frame.Â
Sean Lyons lined a one-out triple to right field and Emerich followed with a walk. Emerich stole second and Lyons scampered home on a throwing error.Â
Conor Smith walked and both runners moved up on a double steal.Â
Bell walked and Emerich scored on a wild pitch on ball four with Smith moving to third. Smith raced home on a wild pitch to put MU in front, 3-2.Â
Jarema was hit by a pitch and
Parker Abate looped a soft liner to center to make it 4-2. Following a walk to
Tyler Holzapfel to load the bases, Jarema came home on a wild pitch to end the scoring.
King's got a run back in the top of the fourth. Sean Padden drew a one-out walk and moved to second on Brad Wilkins' single through the right side.   Padden moved to third on a deep fly out to left center and came home when Dan Hartson reached on a throwing error.
MU added a run in the bottom of the fourth without a hit. Jarema drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. He took third on a fly out to right center and came home on a wild pitch for a 6-3 lead.
In game two, the Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third and added three more in the fourth.
Boylan reached on an error and moved to second when Jarema was hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice bunt, Holzapfel drove in the game's first run with a ground out.
In the fourth, Weisensee beat out a bunt single and Boylan reached on an error. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Jarema was plunked to load the bases. Abate drew a bases-loaded walk and Holzapfel and
Santo Guinta both reached via hit by pitch to force in two more runs for a 4-0 lead.
MU got one more in the sixth. Jarema singled up the middle and moved to second on Abate's line drive single to center.Â
Sean Lyons two-out single through the right side made it 5-0.
King's scored its lone run in the top of the seventh.
Misericordia won for the fifth straight game to improve to 17-6 overall and 9-2 in the MAC Freedom.
