MU Women's Volleyball Edges FDU

The Misericordia University women's volleyball team improved to 2-1 in the MAC Freedom with a 3-2 win over FDU-Florham, Wednesday night at the Anderson Center.

Tara Welliver led the Cougars with 15 kills and six blocks and Sarah Pool added 15 kills, 12 digs and three aces.

Jessica Oltman had 14 kills and three blocks and Karley May had 55 assists.

Amanda Curcio had five blocks and Jassmine Watson and Kaitlin Wheeler added 15 and 14 digs, respectively.

Teams alternated wins with MU taking the first set (25-21), third set (25-16) and fifth set (15-11).  FDU-Florham took the second (25-20) and fourth (25-17) sets.

Trailing 8-7 in the first set, the Cougars scored six straight points to take their first lead with Oltman capping the run with a solo block in the middle for a 13-8 lead.

Welliver's kill in the middle and a block by Pool and Welliver gave the Cougars a 21-17 lead.

The Devils rallied for three straight points, the MU scored four of the next five points to close out the set.

FDU used an 8-0 run to rally from an 18-12 deficit to win the second set.

Down 14-12 in the third set, Alexa Monro's ace capped a 4-0 run as the Cougars took a 16-14 lead.  Pool added two aces as part of a 6-0 spurt to give MU a 24-16 lead.

MU took a 1-0 lead in the fourth set, but FDU scored four straight points and never trailed again.

Amanda Curcio had a kill down the right side and teamed with Welliver for a block for a 7-4 lead.  Pool's cross court kill form the left side made it 9-5.

Oltman hit through two blockers in the middle for a 13-9 lead and Watson kill inside the back line ended a long rally to make it 14-9.

The Cougars closed out the match on an FDU error.
 
The Cougars are 10-6 overall and will play a tri-match at Marywood, Thursday.
