The Misericordia University women's volleyball team advanced to the second round of the ECAC Championships with a 3-0 win over Brooklyn College, Thursday night at the Anderson Center.
Amanda Curcio led the Cougars with 12 kills and three blocks and
Faith Merritt added 11 kills and nine digs.Â
Tara Welliver had nine kills, three aces and two blocks.
Karley May had 38 assists, including the 3,000
th of her career, and two aces.
Jessica Oltman had three blocks and
Allison Swartz had 10 digs.
Merritt had back-to-back aces as MU jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the opener.
Leading 17-15, the Cougars scored five straight points to put the set away.
Fiona Pyfer combined two kills with a pair of Brooklyn errors and Welliver ended the run with an ace.
Delaney Boyd served for the first six points of the second set as the Cougars took advantage of six consecutive attack errors.
The Bulldogs rallied and eventually took a 20-19 lead.
Curcio's smash from the left side pulled MU even and Merritt's kill down the left sideline put the Cougars back in front, 21-20.
Welliver's kill down the middle made it 22-20 and
Mikayla Gunkle followed with an ace.
May added a kill and the Cougars closed the 25-20 win on a Brooklyn error.
The teams traded points throughout much of the third set before the Cougars took control with a 4-0 run.
Welliver and Boyd had consecutive kills for a 19-14 lead and a Bulldog error made it 20-14.
Welliver followed with an ace and
Alexa Santoro eventually clinched the win with a kill from the right side.
Misericordia improved to 21-17 and will face Grove City, Saturday at 2:00 at Marywood.
