Men's Basketball Wins Big Versus King's

The Misericordia University men's basketball team propelled its way to victory with a late first half run against King's College, 85-72, Wednesday at the Anderson Center.

Eleven different players scored for the Cougars as they shot 48.4 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond the arc.

Jason Kenny led all scorers with 24 points in just over 28 minutes of play. The MAC Freedom's leading scorer shot 8-12 from the field with two three-pointers and six free throws. Kenny also added three rebounds, four assists and three steals with a game-high 21 plus/minus.

Stone McCreary had one of his best shooting nights of the season with 23 points and a season-high seven three-pointers on 10 attempts. The senior guard also stuffed the stat sheet with four rebounds, three assists and a steal in just under 23 minutes of action.

Justin Iton was the third Cougar in double-figures with 11 points. The senior forward shot 5-7 from the field with a couple highlight reel slams.

Kenny helped the Cougars gain some separation early in the first half with two three-pointers to put his squad up 13-9. A few possessions later, Tyerell Mann would drain a three-pointer from the top of the key to expand the team's lead to 18-13 with 12:59 remaining.

After the Monarchs took a one-point advantage on a JJ Glinsky deep ball, Brendan Leonard answered back with a three-pointer from the wing to regain the lead. Moments later, Leonard knocked down another shot from beyond the arc to put Misericordia up 27-22 with 7:57 remaining.

However, King's responded with an 8-1 run, which was aided by a couple three-pointers, to retake the lead. After the Cougars and Monarchs went back-and-forth with several one possession leads, Misericordia ended the quarter on a 10-2 run to go up nine points at halftime.

Misericordia's late burst was sparked by Kenny, who started the rally with an intercepted pass, which led to a flagrant foul at the other end. Kenny would knock down both of his free throws and McCreary completed the five-point swing with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession to take a six point lead.

The Cougars came out of halftime with a ton of momentum when Kenny connected with Iton for an alley-oop on the team's first possession.

Moments later, Kenny went coast-to-coast for a bucket after coming away with another steal. McCreary then drained a corner three-pointer on the team's following possession to go up 52-38.

Owen Clark immediately provided the Cougars with energy off the bench when he entered the game with 17:24 remaining. The senior came away with a key defensive stop when he sprinted the length of the court to block a King's jumper on a fast break.

Moments later, Clark would knock down his first three-pointer of the season with a deep ball from well-beyond the three-point stripe.

McCreary would ice the game for the Cougars with three three-pointers in just over three minutes of play. Each long ball was hit from the right wing of the basket.

Mann and Leonard led the Cougars' bench with six points while Sean Gorman added four and Clark tallied three with one rebound and an assist.

Misericordia improved to 13-11 on the season with a 6-7 MAC Freedom mark. The Cougars will celebrate Senior Appreciation Day in their season finale against Eastern University, Saturday at 3:00.
