The Misericordia University men's basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a victory over Eastern University, 73-63, on Senior Appreciation Day at the Anderson Center.
In his final regular season game,
Jason Kenny led the Cougars in scoring with 16 points while adding eight rebounds and shooting 2-5 from beyond the arc. The senior forward was recognized before the game for his 1,000
th (11/15/17 vs. Franklin & Marshall) and 2,000
th (2/2/18 at Manhattanville) career points.
Tony Harding was also recognized before the game for his 1,000
th career point, which was achieved on Jan. 30, 2019 at Delaware Valley. The junior forward tallied 14 points in today's contest with five rebounds and two three-pointers.
A senior forward,
Justin Iton scored 14 points with six rebounds. Iton has scored double-figures in four of his last five contests.
Seniors
Alec Rodway and
Stone McCreary both stuffed the stat sheet in their final regular season game. Rodway had nine points with six rebounds and four assists while McCreary added eight points with seven rebounds and three assists.
Owen Clark,
Tyerell Mann and
Brendan Leonard were also honored on Senior Day. Leonard added three points off the bench while Clark and Mann both got the start for Misericordia.
Rodway helped spark a Cougars' run early in the opening half. The guard recorded assists on back-to-back possessions and then hit a floater in the paint over Eastern's 6'8" rim protector to give his squad a 15-11 advantage.
Later in the half, Misericordia went on an 8-0 run, which gave them its biggest lead of the half at 38-26 with 2:46 remaining. Â The Cougars' eight-point swing, which lasted less than one minute, was started by a Harding layup and capped-off by consecutive three-pointers from Leonard and Rodway.
Eastern would answer back with a 6-0 run in the following two minutes, which cut Misericordia's lead to 38-32 heading into halftime.
The Eagles opened the half with a 4-0 rally, but were quickly silenced by another Cougars' run. Iton sparked the momentum swing with a reverse and-one layup through heavy contact. Kenny added a three-pointer on the following possession while Rodway grabbed a defensive rebound at the other end and went coast-to-coast to expand the Cougars' lead to 45-36 with 16:50 remaining.
On Misericordia's following possession, McCreary added a three-pointer, courtesy of Rodway, on the fast break to cap-off the team's 10-0 run.
After the Eagles attempted to stop some of the bleeding with a much-needed bucket, Kenny grabbed consecutive offensive rebounds at the other end before finishing with an acrobatic and-one layup. The senior guard would drain a deep three-pointer on the team's following possession to put his squad up 18 points with 14:02 remaining.
Misericordia took its biggest lead of the day when
Noah Rivera hit a jumper in the paint to put his team up 19 points with 11:46 left.
The Cougars end the regular season with a 14-11 overall record and a 7-7 MAC Freedom mark.
