MU Baseball Opens With Sweep at Shenandoah

The Misericordia University baseball team opened the season with a 7-5, 16-4 sweep at Shenandoah.

The Cougars scored five runs in the sixth to come-from-behind in the opener and erupted for nine runs in the sixth inning in the nightcap.

Steve Weisensee put the Cougars ahead in the opener with a two-run single in the top of the sixth.

Zach Mason earned the win in relief while Kyle Melahn tossed two shutout innings to pick up the save.

Steve Weisensee (4-4), Dalton Emerich and Sean Lyons were a combined 9-9 with six RBI in the nightcap.

Emerich was 3-3 and Lyons was 2-2.

Ian McCole earned the win with relief help from Tom Jacob and Kyle Rogalski.

After falling behind 4-0 in the bottom of the first inning of game one, the Cougars got two runs back in the fourth.

Santo Guinta led off the inning with a single to center and came around to score on Sean Lyons' double to right center.

Lyons moved to third on a single to right by Austin Miles and came home when Kenny Jarema reached on an error.

Shenandoah added a run in the fifth, but the Cougars responded with a five-run, two-out rally in the top of the sixth.

Lyons drew a lead-off walk and went to third on Jarema's two-single.  Jarema took second on a wild pitch and both runners advanced when Parke Abate reached on an error.

Tyler Holzapfel singled in a run to make it 5-4 and force a pitching change.  Boylan doubled down the left field line to tie it, 5-5.

After another pitching change, Weisensee singled up the middle to drive in two runs and provide the winning margin.

Mason got the final two outs of the fifth inning to get the win and Melahn went the last two innings to get the win.

In game two, the Cougars got on the board with a run in the top of the second and added four more in the fourth.

Weisensee reached via hit by pitch to start the second and moved up on Lyons' single through the left side.  Emerich's single to left made it 1-0.

Back-to-back one-out doubles by Weisensee and Guinta made it 2-0 in the top of the fourth.

Lyons was hit by a pitch and Emerich doubled to drive in Guinta with Lyons coming home on an error to make it 4-0.  Brady Madden's sac fly gave the Cougars a 5-0 lead.

Shenandoah answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Cougars broke the game open with nine runs in the sixth.

Lyons, Jarema, Weisensee, Austin Sinkiewicz, Santino Manganella and Emerich all drove in runs in the sixth.

McCole struck out four while Jacob and Rogalski combined for five strikeouts.
